Serial z idiomem: THE BIG BANG THEORY

Zapraszam do zapoznania się z drugim już wpisem z serii Serial z idiomem. W poprzednim odcinku mogliście poznać kilka idiomów występujących w serialu "Przyjaciele" (link) i, sądząc po ilości odwiedzin, komentarzy i lajków, chyba się Wam spodobało! :) 

Dziś (można powiedzieć, że na specjalne życzenie) na tapetę wjeżdża "Teoria wielkiego podrywu" (The big bang theory).

Znacie? Lubicie?

Jeśli nie znacie, króciutki opis: serial opowiada o perypetiach grupki przyjaciół. Bohaterami są dwójka współlokatorów-geniuszów: fizyk eksperymentalny Leonard Hofstadter i fizyk teoretyczny Sheldon Cooper, ich blond sąsiadka Penny - kelnerka, która chce zostać aktorką, Howard Wolowitz - inżynier lotnictwa bez doktoratu, oraz indyjski astrofizyk Rajesh Koothrappali. W późniejszych sezonach poznajemy również Bernadette - doktor mikrobiologii oraz Amy Farrah Fowler - doktor neurobiologii. 

Nasi jajogłowi bohaterowie żyją w świecie nauki, czarnych dziur i atomów, ich hobby to komiksy i gry komputerowe. Niestety, kompletnie nie radzą sobie w relacjach damsko-męskich, czego skutkiem jest mnóstwo zabawnych sytuacji. Najbardziej wyróżniającą się postacią jest Sheldon. Jest super inteligentny, ale przy tym nie rozpoznaje sarkazmu, nie ma w sobie krzty empatii i nie uznaje możliwości popełnienia przez siebie błędu. Często sprzecza się z innymi czego skutkiem są fantastyczne dialogi :)

Dużo by o serialu i o Sheldonie pisać. Krótko mówiąc: jeśli nie oglądaliście, polecam! A tymczasem poznajmy kilka fajnych zwrotów :)

make yourself at home!

Na początek idiom, który się przyda, gdy mamy gości. "Make yourself at home" to odpowiednik polskiego zwrotu czuj się jak u siebie w domu, czyli rozgość się i zachowuj się tak, jakbyś był u siebie (byle nie do przesady ;) ).

Zobaczcie fragment pierwszego odcinka - jacy oni jeszcze młodzi i piękni! ;) Pewnie domyślacie się kto i gdzie czuł się jak u siebie :)

to have a bone to pick with sb

Dosłownie "mieć z kimś kość do zabrania", po naszemu mieć z kimś do pomówienia. Kość w wyrażeniu to odniesienie do przedmiotu, o który toczy się walka (jak między psami), kłótnia, spór. Gdy my mamy z kimś "do pomówienia" to również w powietrzu wisi kłótnia.

Kto i z kim z TBBT  ma do pogadania i dlaczego? :)

- So, we’re all standing around looking at the post-op x ray and there it is, clear as day, right in the guy’s chest cavity, one of my earrings.

- Oh, my god, what did you do?

- What do you think I did? I discreetly slipped off the other earring, put it in my pocket and then got the hell out of there!

- I have a bone to pick with you, sir.

- Hi, Sheldon.

- Hi, Stephanie. I’m sorry I’m late, but your companion left the most indecipherable invitation.

- What invitation?

- We’re going to the movies. What movie? What theatre? What time? If you were trying to make it impossible to locate you, you couldn’t have done a better job.

- It took me nearly 20 minutes to go through the browser history on your computer to see what movie times you looked up. Wait here, I’ll find us seats.

- No, no, we have seats.

- Not the right seats. 

- What is he doing?

- He’s finding the acoustic sweet spot.

- Does he always do this?

- Sometimes he brings a toy xylophone. I am really sorry about this.

- No, it’s fine. you know, he’s sweet.

- My apologies, you’ve been sitting in it all along. Leonard, you want to slide over one?

- Oh, yeah, this is it.

Czyli im więcej tym lepiej! Ale czy zawsze? :)

Ciekawi co w tej kwestii ma do powiedzenia Sheldon? :D

- I hope it’s all right, I told my girlfriend Bernadette she could join us for dinner.

- Sure. The more, the merrier.

- Wait, no, that’s a false equivalency. More does not equal merry. If there were 2,000 people in this apartment right now, would we be celebrating? No, we’d be suffocating.

- Don’t Sheldon me. We ordered for five people, not six.

- Oh, come on, it’s fine. We’ll just put it all on the table, you know, family style.

- Oh, sure. And while we’re at it, why don’t we put our hands behind our backs, have an old-fashioned eating contest?

"Być na wyścigu" oznacza być zajętym, być w coś zaangażowanym, ale nie w zwykłe coś, tylko w coś, co nas bardzo ekscytuje i sprawia ogromną satysfakcję. Wyrażenie pochodzi z czasów, kiedy wyścigi konne (races) były właśnie takim ekscytującym wydarzeniem.

A co tak ekscytuje naszego ulubionego Sheldona? :D

- Earlier today, I invited Professor Stephen Hawking to join me in the popular online game Words with Friends. Moments ago, he accepted my request. Do you understand what that means?

- That somewhere right now Stephen Hawking is saying, damn it, I meant to click no.

- I’ll walk you through it. The game is not called Words with Strangers. No, it’s not even called Words with Acquaintances. It is called Words with…

- I’m not finishing your sentence. You pulled the plug on my funk.

- Friends! It’s Words with Friends! Which Stephen Hawking and I officially are. Now all I need is a bunk bed with a slide, I’ll have everything I’ve ever wanted since I was six years old.

- That’s really nice, Sheldon, I’m happy for you.

- And I’m happy for you, too. You are now friends with someone who is officially friends with Stephen Hawking. Enjoy it, boys. You may have peaked.

- Sheldon, I know Stephen Hawking. I worked with him.

- And if they ever come out with a game called Words with People You Once Worked With, you’ll be off to the races.

- Sheldon, I don’t think this actually means…

- Hold that thought! Professor Hawking has made a move. Boy, oh, boy. Oh, it’s only a matter of time before we’re coming up with fun nicknames for each other. I’ll be Coop. He’ll be Wheels. If he’s okay with that.

a taste of own medicine

"Smak własnego lekarstwa" to odpowiednik polskiego powiedzenia "odpłacać się komuś pięknym za nadobne". Czyli jak Kuba Bogu, tak Bóg Kubie. 

Idiom wziął się z opowiadania, w którym to handlarz-oszust wciskał ludziom lekarstwo, które miało uleczyć wiele chorób. Pewnego dnia ów handlarz zachorował i próbowano uleczyć go jego lekarstwem. Niestety, bezskutecznie, bo lekarstwo było zwykłym chłamem. 

Który z bohaterów odpłacił się pięknym za nadobne?

- Check this out, I got Sheldon to wear the French maid’s costume.

- Oh, my God, that’s terrible.

- Hey, I gave you first crack at it.

- Why are you doing that? You’re being mean to him.

- He’s mean to me all the time. You’ve heard him tease me about not having a doctorate.

- If you don’t want to get teased about that, get a doctorate. I have one, they’re great.

- Oh, come on, the man torments me. I’m just letting him have a little taste of his own medicine.

- It’s not the same thing. Sheldon doesn’t know when he’s being mean because the part of his brain that should know is getting a wedgie from the rest of his brain.

chickens come home to roost

Co ma kurczak do piwa? Ano to, że "kurczaki zawsze wracają na grzędę", czyli zawsze trzeba stawić czoła konsekwencjom wynikającym z naszych złych decyzji. Innymi słowy, nie można uciec przed następstwami swoich czynów i trzeba wypić to piwo, które się nawarzyło.

Skąd kurczaki? Ano bo tak jak kury wracają do swoich  gniazd, tak samo i my musimy często wracać do popełnianych przez nas błędów.

Zobaczcie z jakiego powodu Leonard musiał wypić piwo, którego sobie nawarzył ;)

- Interesting. Do you recall this conversation? Leonard, want to go halfsies on a steamer? No, Sheldon, we don’t need a steamer. Looks like that rumpled chicken’s come home to roost.

- Hi. Here are the make-up sponges you asked for.

- Oh, thanks, I thought I had more.

- Damn, you’ve got more makeup than I do. You’ve got better makeup than I do. Yeah, I’m borrowing this.

- Hey, hey, hey, hey. This is my Comic-Con makeup. I love you, but there are some things a man doesn’t share with his girlfriend.

to throw hat in the ring

Gdy ktoś "wyrzuca kapelusz na ring" to zgłasza swoją chęć uczestnictwa w jakiejś rywalizacji, konkursie, itp.  Powiedzenie wzięło się ze zwyczaju w XIX wieku, kiedy to bokserzy wrzucali właśnie swoje kapelusze na ring, aby zgłosić chęć do walki.

Kto rzuca kapeluszem? :)

- Hey-hey-hey-hey-hey. Mrs. Davis.

- Hey.

- Hey.

- Dr. Hofstadter.

- Yeah. Just thought I’d come down and start getting ready for swimsuit season.

- Good for you.

- Well, I’m sure you have a lot of good applicants, I just wanted to say hi and let you know that I’ll be throwing my hat in the ring.

the squeaky wheel gets the grease

Tłumacząc dosłownie wychodzi nam "skrzypiące koło smar dostaje". A chodzi tu o to, że najdotkliwsze (i najgłośniejsze) problemy (czy ludzie) dostają najwięcej uwagi. 

W filmiku pojawia się jeszcze jeden idiom, o którym już pisałam przy okazji wpisu o kolorze zielonym: the grass is always greener (on the other side of the fence) (KLIK). Polskim odpowiednikiem jest powiedzenie "cudze chwalicie, swego nie znacie".

Zobaczcie jak oba idiomy rozumie nasz ulubiony bohater:

- Two one six four two zero one nine eight nine. And that, little lady, is pi to a thousand places.

- I'd say I'm sorry I asked, except I didn't.

- Oh, look, it's the Scientific American that covered the paper Leonard and I wrote.

- Oh, let me see.

- I have mixed feelings about doing interviews. I like the part where I talk. I do not like the part where the other man talks.

- Sheldon, this article doesn't mention Leonard at all.

- Well, that can't be right.

- It only refers to €œDr.Cooper and his team. Did you even talk about him? 

- All I did was answer a few questions about the theory. And then expressed my gratitude that Scientific American doesn't include any of those smelly perfume cards.

- Poor Leonard.

- Why? The theory he came up with just got mentioned in Scientific American. He ought to be thrilled.

- He might not be.

- Oh, maybe you're right. He is kind of a lump.

- Think about it. How would you feel if you were referred to as part of Leonard's team? 

- Oh, I'd be incensed.

- So you see what I'm getting at? 

- Squeaky wheel gets the grease? 

- No.

- Grass is always greener? 

- Try again. Well, I don't know-- we're all Groot? Just tell me.
